Even though you have a design in mind, the clay has it’s influence.
An example of planned clay patterns using naturally colored clays. This series was for demonstration purposes, under a time limit. The process is slow and is a bit like repetitive weight lifting, as the design needs to be compressed to remove air bubbles and shrink the design, a clay person’s alternative to the gym!
See the fired results below. This process is more successful if allowed to dry slowly, I experienced much cracking with these, also included are two other vessels from another series.
The clays used for these pieces are fired to cone 6 in an electric kiln, they are:

Red IMCO Navajo Wheel Clay
Red Clay Planet Terracotta
Yellow Quyle Sandstone Buff
Black Aardvark Cassious Basaltic
